Lessons From The Field: My Internship At B&P Associates

I had the opportunity to undertake an internship at B&P Associates for eight weeks, where I gained valuable experience in various areas of law. My decision to pursue an internship prior to applying for the post-call program at the Ghana School of Law was fueled by a desire to understand Ghana’s legal system better. However, I have gained much more than I anticipated over this internship period.

I chose to intern at B&P because it was one of the few firms I found that specialized in intellectual property and corporate law, which were my areas of interest during law school. Additionally, my prior experience in Ghana made me aware of the widespread misogyny in the country, and I believed that a woman-led law firm would be a better fit for me.

The team embraced me, providing multiple opportunities for me to tackle tasks that were previously unfamiliar to me. During my time at B&P, I have drafted attendance notes following court representations, witnessed the cross-examination of an opposing party in court, and even prepared the first draft of a due diligence report, among other tasks.

I had the opportunity to shadow lawyers as they went to court for various purposes including filing court processes and representing clients. Additionally, I have gained experience preparing documents for both legal and business support services.

The team at B&P Associates was incredibly accommodating and willing to guide me, whether it was to explain an area of law or provide clarity on the bureaucratic processes involved in practicing law in Ghana.
Each day, I arrived at work knowing that I would leave having learnt something valuable for building a legal career in Ghana. I have experienced the level of dedication it takes to work at a Firm that goes the extra mile to provide clients with the necessary legal support.

The past two months have been a wonderful learning experience and I am proud of the lessons I have learned, the relationships I have formed and the work I have contributed to, no matter how little.
